With the arrival of this follow-up to 2007’s Alvin and the Chipmunks, I’m irritated all over again by that title’s wording. “Alvin and Two Other Chipmunks” would be clearer. And why must the brattish Alvin get starrier billing than his comrades, the intelligent Simon and the sensitive Theodore? At least the new film (directed by Betty Thomas) teaches him a lesson — the age-old one about staying true to your friends and not getting too big for your boots. Along the way, the trio’s status as the world’s most famous singing chipmunks is challenged by three young females, but this is much the same as the original. Its high-pitched raucousness will be many children’s idea of fun; their parents will dread having to take them.
